Newlane Cohorts

Newlane Cohorts is a new service offered by Newlane University to encourage deep learning, help students complete course work, and get a quick start on their Newlane degree. Cohorts meet regularly, typically once a week in a live video conference with other Cohort members and a Newlane expert for the course of study. Newlane Cohorts provide a community of students to support and encourage you in your studies, and a structure to guide you in completing your courses. Registration for a Cohort is limited and is only available at certain times of the year.

The essential feature of Newlane Cohorts is a shared commitment by a group of Newlane students to complete Newlane coursework according to a certain schedule–typically comparable to full time study. But Newlane Cohorts is more than just this commitment; it’s an opportunity to have a hand-held, community-supported, deep learning experience of working through courses at Newlane.

Note that a Cohort is NOT a replacement for personal study. And it is not comparable to regular lectures covering all or most of the course learning goals you might expect in traditional college courses. While the Cohort will present and review a subset of learning objectives from the selected course(s), students are still responsible to master each course goal and objective outside of the Cohort meeting times, through the instructional resources provided by Newlane within the Newlane app, or other means.

Cohorts will:

  • Have experts walking through some of the course objectives, and cohort members will also review with each other different course objectives.
  • Practice teaching each other, and participate in mini practice course hearings (the final step in passing a course), where cohort members will get to do low-stakes “trial runs” on course hearings.
  • Review the course project criteria and expectations as well as sample projects with the facilitating expert and cohort members.
  • Meet regularly (typically weekly) in a video conference with other Cohort members from across the globe during which members can ask questions, demonstrate any issues they may be having–related to the course work, the learning platform, etc., and make suggestions for improving their Newlane experience.
  • Learn tips and strategies from each other on how best to master and complete Newlane courses.
  • Encourage and support each other throughout the Cohort period.
  • Receive a recording of each Cohort session that they can re-watch and review as often as desired.

While the dynamics are different for each Cohort, having a community of students studying the same material, and meeting together regularly facilitates focused conversation, a range of experience brought to the course, and opportunities to connect beyond the structure of the Cohort, e.g., in study groups, etc.

Joining a Newlane Cohort is a great way to get a jump start on your degree.
