Guided Courses

What are Guided Courses?

Newlane courses are by design self-paced, which means as a student, you set your own schedule. Guided Courses are a free, optional service offered by Newlane University to help students keep on track, complete course work, and work on a course with the support and encouragement of other Newlane students and a course professor. The essential feature of a Guided Course is a shared commitment by a group of students to complete a course according to a certain schedule – typically comparable to full time study. But Guided Courses are more than just this commitment; it’s an opportunity to have a more hand-held, community-supported, deep learning experience.

Guided Courses are not a traditional online class or a replacement for personal study. Only portions of the course will be covered during the weekly meetings. Students are expected to work through objectives on their own time as well.

Who are Guided Courses for?

Guided Courses are for any student who wants some extra support or interaction. At Newlane we want to encourage lots of different ways of learning. If you enjoy class discussions, talking to professors, or having the opportunity to teach and learn from your peers, you will love the Guided Courses.

Participation in Guided Courses is not required. These are offered as an additional support tool to help you succeed. Some of our students are much more comfortable learning independently, and that is fine too.

How does it work?

A group of students meet once a week for a number of weeks (how many weeks depends on the specific course) to work through a course together. A professor will serve as your guide, leading discussions, answering questions, and helping you to progress through the course. Not everything from the course will be covered in the weekly meetings, you will also need to be passing off objectives and working on exercises on your own.

You will meet with the professor and a group of students in a live video conference once a week for an hour. Each session is recorded, so if you miss one, you can watch it later. You can sign-up for all the Guided Courses offered, or just individual courses.

What are the benefits of a Guided Course?

•Master objectives from the course with guidance from a professor.

•Ask questions about the course material whether or not it is covered in the session.

•Learn tips and strategies from other students on how to best master and complete Newlane courses.

•Practice teaching and learning from each other.

•Participate in short practice Course Hearings.

•A review of the course project and expectations and guidance on how to pick a topic.

•Encouragement and support from professors and other students.

•A recording of each session that you can re-watch and review.
