If you already hold a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) but want to continue learning, Newlane offers a streamlined path to earning a second (or 3rd! or 4th!) degree. Whether you’re looking to explore a new field, deepen your understanding of the world, or simply reignite your identity as a curious student, our flexible, affordable programs make it possible.
Newlane’s self-paced, competency-based program allows you to study on your own schedule. There are no fixed deadlines or class times, so you can progress as quickly as you’d like, or you can take it slowly. Since our model is based on demonstrated mastery rather than time spent in a course, you move forward when you’re ready. This means you can fit your education around your existing commitments without pressure, or rigid deadlines.
With Newlane, earning another degree is affordable, flexible, and built around your goals—allowing you to focus on learning, not logistics.
Why Earn Another Degree?
Many students who have already completed a degree return to education for reasons beyond career advancement:
- Pursue Your Passion – Maybe you studied accounting for job security back in the day, but your real love is philosophy, or literature, or anthropology, or astronomy. Now, you can dive into the ideas and questions that have always fascinated you.
- Stay Intellectually Engaged – Learning doesn’t stop after your first degree. And you’re not looking for learning that is mostly chasing random rabbit holes; you can learn and master the curriculum of a full major. And a second degree keeps your mind sharp, gives you new insights, and helps you stay connected to what’s happening in the world.
- Embrace Lifelong Learning – We’ve grown accustomed to the idea that college learning must be crammed into 4 years in your early 20s, but that’s just how many Universities have found it easy to manage (and make money), not how humans must learn. But identifying as a student again can be deeply fulfilling. With Newlane, you can study on your own terms, at your own pace, and without disrupting your life.
- Use the Time You Have – If you finally have spare time, you can dedicate it to learning. This is a perfect opportunity to explore new ideas and perspectives. You can get away from doom scrolling, and turn your “lost” hours into a degree.
- And Yes, Career Advancement – It’s incontestible that having another degree demonstrates breadth and discipline. No one becomes less interesting or less marketable for completing an additional major.
A Faster Path to Your Degree
If you already have a Bachelor’s degree (or higher), you only need to complete the major requirements—just 10 courses—to earn a second degree. The rest of the credits can be transferred from the degree you’ve already earned.

- History of Ancient Western Philosophy
- History of Modern Western Philosophy
- Critical Reading and Writing
- Symbolic Logic
- Advanced Topics: Metaphysics
- Advanced Topics: Epistemology
- Two additional advanced-level philosophy courses or a Capstone project
Or, you may be interested in a BA in Liberal Arts, which you would only need to complete the following 10 courses:
- Exploring the Liberal Arts
- Critical Reading and Writing
- Foundations of Social Science
- Foundations of Natural Science
- Foundations of Arts & Humanities
- Four advanced-level courses in a chosen area
- One elective (typically a prerequisite for an advanced course)
- (There is also an option to complete a Capstone project in place of two courses.)
