Newlane’s servers are hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), which uses decentralized data centers. This ensures that a natural disaster in one area would not disrupt the University’s servers. Additionally, Newlane employs geographically dispersed personnel who can access the servers in the event of an emergency.
The University’s platform and educational records are backed up and stored on AWS with built-in redundancies and security measures. As a distributed team with no central location—though the University is headquartered in Utah—Newlane employs experts and serves students globally. For example, if a storm disrupts power for an expert in one area, students can seamlessly connect with another expert elsewhere. The administrative office does not house any servers. If an administrator or expert is impacted by a disaster, others can step in to maintain operations.
Newlane’s team can also communicate with students at any time, thanks to its global distribution. Furthermore, since courses are not dependent on a single expert, if one expert is unavailable, another can host a course hearing or review projects without interruption.
Newlane’s proprietary Learning Management System (LMS) is hosted on AWS servers across decentralized data centers worldwide. Daily backups allow the system to be restored to the same or a new server. If an AWS datacenter suffers an issue that cannot be resolved or migrated by Amazon, Newlane can restore its system from the most recent backup to another data center anywhere in the world. This platform enables quick responses to outages or disasters if the hosting provider fails to maintain operations.
Newlane also maintains recent local backups of its courses. In the unlikely event that both the hosting provider and hosting management fail, the University could recreate its platform with some disruption.
Student records, operating files, and other data are also stored on AWS with restricted access. The CTO maintains a local synced backup on a file server, also restricted. In the event of a major outage or data loss, these files can be restored locally. Newlane’s platform allows staff and instructors to work from any internet-enabled location, including mobile devices.
